Editorial:
We thought we'd send out an abbreviated edition this week - in part
because of a great opportunity available to YMN readers near DC. This
Friday (the 26th) there's a special screening of the upcoming moving
"Proof" to be followed by a Q&A session with the director, John Madden
(who also directed Shakespeare in Love). And there's free tickets for
the fastest of you out there (details below).
We've also had a couple of fascinating posts in the last month,
including a story about REUs which will be of interest to those of you
who help run them as well as those who want to apply for next year.
There's also a mathematical look at popular game called Sudoku, an
announcement for an upcoming conference, and a look at how to choose
graduate schools.
We'd also like to welcome the newest member of the YMN Board, Jackie
Jensen. You may have already met Jackie at one of the many panel
discussions she's organized at MathFest.
We hope everyone's fall term starts well and we look forward to reading
your thoughts and concerns online.

"Proof" the movie - coming soon! (with free tickets if you're near DC)

Mathematicians everywhere were thrilled when the Broadway play "Proof"
came out. Finally a positive portrayal of a mathematician - a welcome
relief from the insane (A Beautiful Mind) and the murderous (the
Unabomber). Now it's coming out on the big screen with Gwyneth Paltrow
and Anthony Hopkins. And if you're near DC, there are free tickets
available for an advance screening on August 26th...

Section: Career
There's an interesting opportunity for young PhDs to get some mentoring
before heading off to teach at non-doctoral granting institutions.
There's also a component for undergrads bridging into grad school.

Courses which I wish I had taken

Now that I'm out of graduate school there are several courses that I
wish I had taken in graduate school (and even some in undergrad)

Reflections on REUs
By overconvergent

Many of my colleagues have been involved in REUs
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517&from=fund
over the years; I have been working with students too this summer. In
this note I'll collect a few of my thoughts on them.

Sudoku, the New Rage

Euler gives us yet another thing to scratch our heads about. According
to a Wikipedia article on Sudoku
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Sudoku
it all starts with Euler. This article leads one to an online article
from The Observer
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,6903,1484328,00.html
that states, "The Sudoku story began in 1783 when Leonhard Euler, a
Swiss mathematician, devised 'Latin Squares', which he described as 'a
new kind of magic squares'. Euler had come up with a grid in which
every number or symbol appears once in each row or column. More than
two centuries later, the difference for Sudoku players is that the
grid is subdivided into blocks of nine."

Choosing a grad school
By brianbirgen, 2005-07-17 07:42:56

Here's a link to an article my Horizons magazine from long ago on
choosing a graduate school. What actually brought this up was a
discussion about what were good questions to ask about a grad school
when you were on a campus visit. A list of some such questions is
available at Sarah Marie Belcastro's website. Perhaps it might be
helpful to contribute some other questions worth asking while on a
visit to a potential graduate school.
