Editorial:

Another semester done - whew, it really flew by. If your semester was
anything like mine you'll need to take a much needed break over the next
few weeks to recover.

Here at YMN we'd like to welcome two new faces to the Board, Kristi
Meyer of Wisconsin Lutheran College and Raouf Ghomrasni of University of
the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa). Thanks to both of you
for helping to fulfill YMN's mission of serving the community of young
mathematicians.

The Joint Meetings are fast approaching, and we're heading back to New
Orleans. YMN has a full slate of activities planned. In addition to
several panel discussions, we'd like to invite you to the Town Meeting
where you can share your thoughts and concerns as well as the Board
meeting where you can learn how to give something back. Here's a pocket
guide to our events:

Friday January 5, 2007, 9:30 a.m.-10:50 a.m.
Panel Discussion: Keeping your research alive.

Friday January 5, 2007, 2:15 p.m.-4:15 p.m.
Project NExT-YMN Poster Session

Friday January 5, 2007, 3:50 p.m.-5:10 p.m.
Panel Discussion: How to interview for a job in the mathematical
sciences.

Saturday January 6, 2007, 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Young Mathematicians Network Town Meeting

Monday January 8, 2007, 9:00 a.m.-10:20 a.m.
MAA-YMN Panel Discussion: Undergraduate career paths in mathematics.

Saturday, January 6, 2007 8:31 p.m.-10:00 p.m.

YMN Board Meeting

In this digest issue, you'll also find lots of great articles posted
over the last few months. They include a note about childcare at the
Joint Meetings, news about the latest TIMSS study, a surprise
announcement from the editors of Topology, a note about the passing of
Paul Halmos, and a whole bunch more. Also, our site has become a magnet
for questions about graduate school - stop by and help answer those
questions: http://concerns.youngmath.net/section/Grad_Life.

See you in New Orleans!

Childcare at the Joint Mathematics Meetings

By halewis

Section: Work and Family Life

Childcare is still available, with guaranteed spots for those who
register by December 8, at the 2007 Joint Mathematics Meeting in New
Orleans January 5-8.

The childcare information is available here and it is once again being
run through the KiddieCorp Children's Program. On a personal note, we

used the JMM Childcare in San Antonio last year, with great results....

After months of unsuccessful negotiations with publisher Elsevier about
the price policy of library subscriptions, the entire editorial board of
the journal Topology handed in their resignation, with effect from 31

December, 2006. See their resignation letter and an article in the
New York Sun.

Brown study on attitudes and abilities

By dkung

Section: Teaching

A new study from the Brookings Institution's Brown Center on Education
Policy looks at TIMSS scores (the international math assessment) in
various countries and compares them with students' attitudes toward
mathematics. The results are a bit surprising...

By Emil Volcheck,

Section: News

Paul Halmos passed away October 2 in Los Gatos, California. He was the
author of more than a dozen books, many of them familiar to
mathematicians around the world, and was acknowledged for his
expository skill, both in writing and speaking. He received many awards
during his lifetime, including the AMS Steele Prize (1983, for his many
graduate texts) and the MAA Gung and Hu Award (2000, for distinguished
service to mathematics). For many years, he was active in the governance
of the AMS,

serving in many positions including as vice-president (1981-82).
