Editorial:

 

Greetings and, for most of you, welcome back to school!  We at YMN hope
that the fall is going well.  We've had lots of activity on our website
since we last sent out a digest. (Apologies for the delay - I was busy
with my new tenured/chair duties.)  Some introductions to articles are
copied below - others are waiting for your valuable input at
www.youngmath.org <http://www.youngmath.org/> .

 

To combat a growing spam problem on our site, we have been forced to
restrict the ability to post stories and comment on others' stories to
registered users.  Since I'm writing about being a registered user, let
me point out a couple of additional benefits.  By registering you can
opt to get daily, weekly, or monthly digests (just like this but without
the boring intro!)  As a registered user, you'll also be able to vote on
people's stories and comments - bringing the better content to the fore
for everyone.  You can also register yourname at youngmath.net as a
permanent email address (and have your email forwarded to your account
from there.)  So take a few moments and register:

As for this month's content, we have news on the recently awarded

YMN/Project NExT Poster Session

Project NExT and the Young Mathematician's Network invite submissions of
abstracts for a poster session to be held on Friday, January 5, 2007
from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m. (room TBA) at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in
New Orleans. The poster size will be 48" by 36"; it is best to have the
posters 36" high. Posters and materials for posting pages on the posters
will be provided on-site. We expect to accept about thirty posters from
different areas within the mathematical sciences.

Panel Recap - Graduation is Coming:  Now What?

YMN recently sponsored a panel on careers and graduate school
opportunities at Mathfest 2006 in Knoxville, TN.  The panel was aimed at
undergraduates and panelists included David Anderson (University of
Tennessee, Knoxville), Marian Barry (National Security Agency), Don
Saari (University of California, Irvine), Faisal Siddiqi (Society of
Actuaries), and Andy Sterrett (editor of 101 Careers in Mathematics).

How does one find a thesis problem to solve?

I have not started grad school yet, but I was wondering how one goes
about finding a problem to solve for a thesis. I am aware that not all
thesis papers are ground shattering. How do you find low hanging fruit
to investigate? How do you know the choice will be productive and
solvable?

One's advisor is sure to be of great help here, but the advisor can only
do so much for you.    Thanks.
