concern to mathematicians at the beginning of their careers. Please
visit the Young Mathematicians' Network Scoop site at
http://concerns.youngmath.net <http://concerns.youngmath.net/>

Welcome to the Young Mathematicians' Network digest of stories posted
over the last few months! A special welcome to those of you who signed
up for this newsletter at one of our events during the Joint Meetings in
New Orleans. In the Big Easy, YMN events included the annual town
meeting, a poster session, a panel on the job market, a panel on keeping
your research alive and a panel on job options for undergraduates.
Overviews of some of those events appear on our site (see links below)
in case you missed them at the conference.
Since our last issue we've also seen some big news regarding E8, one of
the exceptional Lie Groups discovered over a century ago. Also included
in this digest are some professional development opportunities and an
update on this year's job market. Finally our site includes a bunch of
questions that interested readers have posted, about applying to and
choosing graduate schools, as well as a host of other topics. Take a
minute to support other young mathematicians out there by answering
their questions.
And please keep in mind that because of an ongoing issue with spam
comments and stories, if you'd like to post something you need to sign
up for an account.

other fields For Immediate Release PALO ALTO, Calif., March 19, 2007
The American Institute of Mathematics (AIM), one of the leading math
institutes in the U.S., announced today that after four years of
intensive collaboration, 18 top mathematicians and computer scientists
from the U.S. and Europe have successfully mapped E8, one of the largest
and most complicated structures in mathematics.

Academic Job Wiki
Section: Job Search
The academic job wiki has been around for a couple of years and is
always mentioned on the Chronicle of Higher Education job forum. It is a
place where information on what part of the search the search committees
are on. This year for the first time math is included and its info can
be found here.

How's the Job Market This Year?
Section: Job Search
Every year is a little different. This year's Employment Center at the
Joint Meetings had 129 employers and 612 applicants. There also seemed
to be a record number of interviews taking place outside the Employment
Center. The Networking Room looked more like an interview room to me.
What's your impression of the job market this year?
