[*Concerns of Young Mathematicians*] YMN newsletter - special Joint Meetings edition

It's a rare sabbatical-year posting from me, but I wanted to let
everyone who's attended YMN events at the Joint Meetings know what's on
tap for this year's events. Below that, I've included a couple of
teasers for some of the more recent stories from our website,
www.youngmath.net <http://www.youngmath.net/> .

Since it's the giving season, I'll make two quick plugs in hopes that
you're still in the giving mood. First, if you've benefited from
reading YMN things in the past, please consider taking a minute to
forward this message along to a few aspiring young mathematicians.
Second, if you'd like to give back to the community by helping out with
YMN, drop me a line or come to the YMN Board Meeting in San Diego
(Tuesday night at 8pm after the Town Hall Meeting.)

Best wishes for a great New Year!

Knots in the News

Knot theory [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knot_theory] is the branch of
mathematics used to classify and analyze different types of knots. The
mathematical focus is primarily on knots that have already formed, but
recently two physicists from UC San Diego, Dorian M. Raymer and Douglas
E. Smith, examined why knots form. To find their article, click below.

Have Math Searches Moved to the Fall?

As recently as 10 years ago, you never would have heard of a college or
university going finishing a job search before the New Year. There were
many advantages to this sort of system for both sides of the interview
table.

Word on the street is that as with the Presidential primaries, the job
search calendar is moving up. Click below for more.

A new concept in publishing ...

I am now sure how serious a journal this Rejecta is, but the concept is
interesting and novel. From their website: Rejecta Mathematica is a new,
open access, online journal that publishes only papers that have been
rejected from peer-reviewed journals (or conferences with comparable
review standards) in the mathematical sciences.
